~~Stone Facts~~
Lapis Lazuli
Lapis is a gorgeous deep blue stone. The color of lapis is always blue, but the hues will range depending on the quality of the stone. Typical lapis has cloudy, grey-white calcite marbled among the blue, with flecks of pyrite (fool’s gold). The highest quality lapis is the deepest blue, with no calcite, and small veins of pyrite. The amount of pyrite in the stone does not diminish the value, but identifies it as lapis, as sodalite also has the deep blue hue. The high quality lapis is currently more valuable than gold. The best lapis has been mined in Afghanistan for over 6000 years. It can also be found in Canada, Chile, Pakistan, Siberia, and the U.S.
In ancient Egypt, lapis was ground up into powder and used cosmetically as eye shadow, or eyeliner. During the Renaissance, lapis was used as the pigment for a very expensive blue oil paint. This paint was reserved for religious icon paintings, and was the color associated with the Virgin Mary. Today, the same color of paint is called Ultramarine, and contains no lapis.
